Our History

More than 30 years of experience in toxicological services

We at the Institute for Competence Contract Research in Rossdorf (ICCR-Roßdorf) can look back at more than 30 years of toxicological testing of chemical and other products. Over all these years we have constantly evolved with an ever-larger and up-to-date portfolio of test systems. Our customers see us as a reliable and experienced provider of advanced scientific services, while being flexible in scheduling and design of studies. Since 1987 we’ve been continuously certified under GLP for our particular categories of tests and in 2008, we also became certified as a quality control laboratory under GMP. For the recognition of our testing of medical devices, we have also been accredited according to EN 17025 by the DAKKS and recognised by the ZLG since 2011. All quality standards are inspected at regular intervals by the responsible monitoring authorities.

We started our journey in 1986 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) and an independent start-up under the name of Cytotest Cell Research GmbH & Co KG and the leadership of Professor Miltenburger. Our focus at the time was on in vitro and in vivo studies of the genetic toxicity properties of chemicals.

In 1988 we became a subsidiary to the international Swiss contract research company RCC – Research and Consulting Company Ltd. with headquarters at Itingen near Basel. Under the new name of RCC Cytotest Cell Research GmbH we moved in 1989 into our newly built facility at Rossdorf near Darmstadt and here we can be found even today. During the following decades, we were established as a Centre of Excellence for genetic toxicology with the full set of studies. At the same time our portfolio also developed and based on our large expertise in in vitro cell cultures, the number of study types using Alternative Toxicological Methods grew very fast. Today we can offer a multitude of toxicological methods to support producers and other registrants, so that they can successfully market their products.

As a result of the acquisition of RCC in 2008 by Harlan Laboratories Inc., Indianapolis, USA, our name changed to Harlan Cytotest Cell Research GmbH. Seven years later, in 2015, we became part of the Envigo Group with over 50 locations across the world. As Envigo CRS GmbH, we were the largest site in Europe for genetic toxicity studies within Envigo.

Since August 2019 we offer our proven services independently as ICCR-Roßdorf GmbH.
